HR Exchange Network: What HR and L&D Need to Learn about AI, Dr. Jeanette Winters, November 24, 2020 – This article explored the virtues of AI in fields ranging from healthcare to human capital management. The reporter interviewed Margie Meacham and discovered that HR is actually behind the proverbial 8-ball when it comes to AI. The interview subject noted that while we see many examples of AI in our daily lives, there are fewer of those applications in talent development than just about any other field. She claims with a few notable exceptions, HR departments are a step or more behind other business functions when it comes to adopting AI.
People Matters: The Pandemic Is Speeding up the Adoption of Automation and AI, Mastufa Ahmed (based on an interview with Shailesh Singla, Oracle’s HCM head in India), November 24, 2020 – In this Q&A piece, Singla points to a McKinsey study, which indicates that that adoption of automation and AI has expanded the most among firms that had a greater shift to remote work since the outbreak. Among such companies, 80 percent indicated an increase in automation for example. Singla also points out an Oracle survey that showed distress in the workforce with 92 percent indicating they prefer to talk to robots than to their managers regarding mental health issues, as they feel this provides a judgment-free zone. In his opinion, this is a clear mandate to move quickly on the adoption of AI technology.
Diginomica: HR Tech 2020: Murky Signs of What’s Next in HR with a Hint of Clarify, Brian Sommer, November 5, 2020 – This was a recap of findings based on the HRTechConf, but as the author notes, the feel was quite different this year, as it was a virtual event. The author noted the prevalence of AI tech in vendor presentations and noted that many will use machine learning to schedule interviews, automate processes and even score and rank job-seekers applications or resumes. However, it seems facial recognition and the ability to “read” faces are not yet ready for prime time, according to Sommer. The bottom line: accelerated change is being driven by the pandemic and if your executive ranks aren’t current, it’s time to retrain or replace them.
Science Mag: Artificial Intelligence Is Evolving All by Itself, Ed Gent, April 13, 2020 – According to this article, AI is evolving – literally. Researchers have created software that borrows concepts from Darwinian evolution, including “survival of the fittest,” to build AI programs that improve over generations without any human input. In each cycle, Google scientists started with 100 basic mathematical algorithms. Then by assigning them to tasks such as comparing images, the program compares the performance of one algorithm against another. Copies of top performers are then “mutated” by randomly replacing, editing, or deleting some of its code to create slight variations of the best algorithms. These so-called “children” get added to the population, while older programs are culled and the cycle repeats.
